Microblading has quickly become one of the most popular semi-permanent makeup procedures in the beauty world—and for good reason. Who doesn’t want to wake up with flawless brows every morning? But like any cosmetic procedure, it’s important to weigh the benefits and potential drawbacks before making your decision.
So, is microblading right for you? Let’s dive into the pros and cons to help you decide.
Pros of Microblading
1. Natural-Looking Results
Microblading mimics the appearance of real hair using tiny, hair-like strokes. The result? Fuller, beautifully defined brows that look incredibly natural—especially when done by a skilled artist.
2. Saves Time in Your Routine
Say goodbye to daily brow pencils and powders. With microblading, your eyebrows are ready to go from the moment you wake up. It’s a huge time-saver, especially for busy mornings or people who work out regularly.
3. Long-Lasting, Yet Not Permanent
Microblading typically lasts between 12 and 18 months, depending on your skin type and lifestyle. It’s semi-permanent, so you get the benefits of long-lasting brows without the lifelong commitment of a traditional tattoo.
4. Customizable to Your Face
Every set of brows is designed based on your unique face shape, bone structure, and natural hair growth. The pigment color is also chosen to complement your skin tone and hair color, giving you a personalized result.
5. Minimal Maintenance
Once healed, microbladed brows require very little upkeep. An annual touch-up is usually all that’s needed to keep them looking fresh and well-defined.
Cons of Microblading
1. It’s Not Painless
Some clients may feel slight discomfort during the procedure. Everyone’s pain threshold is different, so reactions can vary. My clients voted 3.6/10 - so it still seems alright to me!
2. Healing Takes Time
Your brows will go through a healing process that includes slight scabbing, flaking, and pigment softening for 10-14 days depending on your skin type. It can take up to 4–8 weeks - first session and a top-up - for the final results to fully reveal themselves.
3. Not Ideal for All Skin Types
Microblading works best on normal to dry skin. Oily or very sensitive skin may not retain the pigment well or blur so it is crucial for you to find artist who won't push you towards that technique and educate you that it's not for everyone. When it doesn't work, it could cause the strokes to blur or fade unevenly over time. (If that sounds like you, consider nano brows as an alternative!)
4. Upfront Cost
Quality microblading isn’t cheap—and it shouldn’t be. Investing in a certified and experienced artist means paying more upfront, but it also ensures safety and beautiful results, ensuring best quality products were used.
5. Touch-Ups Are Required
Microblading isn’t a one-and-done treatment. A touch-up is typically needed 6–8 weeks after the initial session, and 2-yearly refreshers might help maintain the look.
Microblading is a game-changer for anyone who wants low-maintenance, natural-looking brows that enhance their features and simplify their beauty routine. However, like any cosmetic procedure, it’s not without its trade-offs.
Do your research, choose a licensed professional, and ask plenty of questions during your consultation. The right artist will help you decide if microblading is the best fit—or recommend a better alternative like nano brows or powder shading.
